Kaapzicht Wine Estate
Kaapzicht is situated in the Bottelary Hills with magnificent views towards Table Mountain. The Bottelary ward is situated in Stellenbosch District, an area that has already won many accolades for its high quality wines. The 174 hectare estate has 135ha of vineyards planted on mainly north-facing slopes. An ambitious planting programme is seeing the replacement of the Chenin vineyards with top quality red varieties while the old gnarled pinotage bush vines are given tender care and attention.
Danie Steytler, who has been the winemaker for over two decades has a new batch of awards to celebrate. "Kaapzicht Steytler Vision 2001" received the Award for Best Red Blend in the world at International Wine & Spirit Competition, London 2004. In addition, the Kaapzicht Steytler Pinotage 2001 at the same competition also received the international trophy for the Best Pinotage. Recently he has started to leave the whites on the lees for longer and has changed his technique for reds too: he has introduced cold soaking, adds yeast at a slightly later stage and ferments at lower temperatures.
Family Affair
The farm was purchased by the Steytler family in 1946 and almost every member of the Steytler family is involved in the Kaapzicht Estate. George is the viticulturist and handles all the land work and maintenance. Mandy his wife, hires out `Kaapzicht Functions Venue` for parties, weddings etc (self-catering) as well as a little overnight cottage, called `Vineyard Cottage` on the farm. Danie is the winemaker and his wife Yngvild runs the office and deals mainly with exports.
