Fleur du Cap

The Bergkelder, resting comfortably on the slopes of the Papegaaiberg in Stellenbosch, was founded in 1967. This “famous cellar in the mountain” was the first of its kind in South Africa and is known for producing great wines and, year after year, vintage after vintage, this prestigious winery continues to harvest international awards.
Fleur du Cap is a range of exceptional wines that reflects the generosity of nature and the dedication of the viticulturist and winemaker who personally select only the finest sunripened grapes to produce wines of abundant flavour and character. Made in a contemporary style, the philosophy of minimum interference is adhered to, and the winemakers have excelled in producing wines with remarkable concentrations of fruit. Released under the distinguished seal of The Bergkelder, each bottle has achieved perfection, and is ready for your enjoyment.
The first Fleur du Cap vintages were released in 1968, shortly after the completion of The Bergkelder, one of the most advanced underground cellars in the southern hemisphere built into the hillside of the Papegaaiberg. In 1979, it took the lead by introducing maturation of quality wine in small casks of new French oak and in 1998 The Bergkelder launched the reserve range of Fleur du Cap Unfiltered wines, known for its superior quality. Handpicked in the vineyard and handcrafted in the cellar to unlock the natural style inherent in the wine, these new generation wines capture and reflect the unbridled expression of the grape. Each of the wines in the unfiltered range is made of grapes from a specific vineyard block or a blend of two vineyards. Owing to the more traditional hands-on approach in the cellar, these wines are not filtered resulting in rich, complex wines that simply abound with fruit and flavour.
In keeping with its role as one of the most important innovators in the Southern Hemisphere, this winery was the first in South Africa to produce a range of unfiltered wines, and today, again in the spirit of innovation, The Bergkelder has produced a new generation of wines that retain the absolute flavour and varietal character of the grape. These wines allow for the fullest expression of their unique terroir and reflect in every way the generosity of nature at the Cape.
The grapes for Fleur du Cap are harvested from different areas in the Coastal Region. In Stellenbosch, the premier wine region of the Cape, the grapes are picked from the foothills of the Bottelary hills. The Franschhoek Valley, where the French Huguenots settled, is not only steeped in history, but so are its vines. Many are a century old, thus imparting great depth and character to the wine. The grapes are harvested at a high altitude where they hug the cliffs and the mountain shadows.
The balance of the harvest is supplied by the Helderberg, whose vineyards are cooled by the prevailing breezes from the False Bay coast. These grapes ripen over a long period, and are brimming with full, luscious flavour. The result can be described as a journey through the summer orchards of the Cape white wines with a profusion of tropical fruit and citrus aromas that sweep across the palate, and reds that fill the mouth with wealth of berry flavours on a background of spice.
