Durbanville Hills
Seven leading vineyard owners in the Durbanville Hills district joined together to create Durbanville Hills together with Distell to promote the regional individuality of this prime wine growing area, punctuated by hills. Just 10 kms from the cold Atlantic Ocean, it boasts a temperate climate with Atlantic sea breezes cooling the vines during the summer months.
All member vineyards subscribe to IPW (Integrated Production of Wine) growing practices, designed to sustain natural resources. They are dryland vineyards, encouraging a process of natural selection. In addition, a meticulous crop control is applied to further limit yields and promote concentration of varietal flavour.
The Durbanville Hills wine cellar lies in the first valley from the Cape; just twenty minutes drive from Cape Town. It is situated beyond the Tygerberg or Luipaerds Berghen (Leopard's Hill) in the Durbanville producing region which is a mere ten kilometres from Table Bay.
Durbanville was established in 1806 and named for the Governor of the Cape, Sir Benjamin D'Urban, who is among the Cape's oldest Municipalities. It is home to nearly 40 000 residents. Just as the Castle of Good Hope was a source of strength and encouragement to the early settlers, today the bastion of the Durbanville Hills Cellar stands proud as a vantage point to the people of Durbanville.
The Durbanville Hills Range
Premium
The Durbanville Hills Premium collection are marked by prominent fruit flavours balanced by finesse.
Rhinofields
The Rhinofields wines are named after Renosterveld - the indigenous Cape flora found on the Tygerberg Hills and threatened in this region with extinction. A patch of this renosterveld is located behind the Durbanville Hills cellar. These wines are the ‘reserve’ range of ultra premium wines made in smaller quantities from 2-3 vineyard blocks. It is packaged in a taller bottle which is embossed with a DH logo. This range can change depending on the grape quality & will most likely include a shiraz & cabernet in the next few years.
Single Vineyard
The Single Vineyard range epitomises the typical varietal flavours that are found in Durbanville. They are packaged in the same bottle as the Rhinofields range with different shaped labels. The range will never exceed 700-800 c/s unless it is an exceptional year or quality. This range can be extended to include other varietals depending on the quality of the grapes. These wines have historic names that refer to the early settler days of the Cape. There is Luipaardsberg (Leopard Mountain), as the Tygerberg was also known in the time of the early settlers, and Caapmans, the generic name for several nomadic tribes located in and around the Cape Town area in the early 1700s. Biesjes Craal is the name of an early outstation, used as an outspan for oxen and where salt was collected.
