De Krans Estate

De Krans Wine Cellar is situated along the upper reaches of the picturesque Gamka River Valley near Calitzdorp. The history of the farm dates back to 1890, when it was bought by the Nel family. Since 1985, most of the classic port and wine varieties have been planted. The present owners and cellar masters are brothers Boets (who qualified as a Cape Wine Master in 1997) and Stroebel Nel.
The cellar has won more than 400 medals and awards since 1980 and was crowned Champion Private Wine Cellar in the Klein Karoo region in 1986, 1989, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1998 and 1999. De Krans produced the Champion Wine of the region in 1995 (White Muscadel Jerepigo), 1997 and 1999 (Port). It has won the trophy for the Champion Port in 1990, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997 and 1999, as well as the Champion Pinotage in 1998, 1999 and Champion Chenin Blanc in 1998 and 2000. De Krans also produced the Champion White Wine of the area with a Chardonnay in 1999.
An impressive range of wines are produced, but De Krans really became well-known for its world-class Port. The Vintage Reserve Port is widely regarded as one of the best Ports in South Africa. Earlier vintages of this Port were in great demand at previous Nederberg Auctions. This Port has been chosen as the Most Desirable South African Port in the book "One Hundred Wines 1999" written by Allan Mullins and Dave Swingler, two highly respected wine critics. Only traditional Portuguese varieties are used in all De Krans Ports. The whole range, namely the Cape Ruby, Cape Tawny, Cape Vintage and Vintage Reserve Ports, are made in the drier classical style. The 1997 Vintage Reserve Port also received a Veritas double gold and five star in the John Platter Wine Guide 2000 and 2001.
