Midway between the most southerly tip of Africa (Cape Agulhas) and Cape Town is the wine ward of Walker Bay. It is one of the coolest wine growing regions in the Cape as its climate is largely influenced by the cool Atlantic Ocean. Central to Walker Bay is the Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven and Earth) Valley home of Bouchard Finlayson. The valley is surrounded and sheltered by Galpin Peak and the Tower of Babel, which traps the cloud cover and moisture brought in from the sea by the prevailing wind. Consequently summers are warm rather than hot and winters are mild and frost free.

After graduating from Stellenbosch as an Oenologist and furthering his studies at Geisenheim in Rheingau, the winemaker, Peter Finlayson rose to the challenge of setting up and running the first winery in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The success of which became legendary culminating in the 1989 Diners Club Winemaker of the year award for his achievements with the Pinot Noir grape.

Peter is committed to raising standards of his award winning wines. Many study trips to Burgandy have ensured that valuable friendships have been kindled with associates such as Paul Bouchard and Bruno Lorenson. These contacts have spawned a web of knowledge, which can only be measured in the pleasure enjoyed from the products of Peters winemaking.
