Thunderchild Cabernet Franc/Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

This classic blend was created by using the ancient technique of fermenting uncrushed berries with native yeast from the grapes.  After aging for 1 year in French barrels, it was bottled without finings or filtration.  A further 12 months bottle aging took place prior to release.

In 1918 in the wake of the Great Flu Epidemic an orphanage, Die Herberg, was built by the Robertson community for the children left orphaned and destitute.

In 2003 a 5ha vineyard was planted on the orphanage's grounds by the same community.  All planting materials, soilpreparation and irrigation were donated.  This blend is made for free by sympathetic cellars and sold in aid of the children, who today are no longer all orphans but mainly from broken homes.100% of the grapes for this blend is grown on the ophanage's grounds and 100% of the profit is donated to the children.  Only true audited costs are remunerated, time and effort can't be recompensed.

None of the children in Herberg Children's Home in Robertson originate from homes and communities where the sun proverbially always shines and where there is always lovely weather. The background of our children is characterised by dark and threatening clouds that sometimes creates the feeling of being pushed into the ground. Thunderchild very accurately describes our children in the most beautiful way - the wonderful power of nature.

These children are nature's wonders who fight through the most threatening and thundering clouds - children that overcome the darkness with the light and beauty and power of an electrical storm, in such a manner that we who deal with them, often stand amazed by their ability to shine brightly after darkness, trauma, hurt and longing. They are in the real sense true Thunderchildren.
