Spice Route Wine Company

Spice Route Wine CompanySpice Route Wine Company

Five centuries ago, ancient mariners endured a treacherous journey through uncharted seas to the Cape in search of exotic spices. Their bravery and spirit inspired Charles Back to set up the Spice Route Wine Company in 1997.

It was by pure chance that Back stumbled upon a tank of excellent Sauvignon Blanc in a Swartland cooperative when he was looking for new and interesting places to produce wines. This warmer area was not known back then for producing quality wines. Back immediately purchased the farm ‘Klein Amoskuil’ situated a couple of kilometres south of Malmesbury and began producing the Spice Route’s Swartland terroir-styled wines.

The Spice Route’s Swartland vineyards lie on the western slopes of the Paardeberg Mountain where decomposed granite and deep red iron-rich clay meets ancient Malmesbury shale soils. As one of the Western Cape’s most expressive and leading wine producing areas, these vineyards benefit from the cool Atlantic breezes, helping the low-yielding vines to survive the hot, dry summers and the cold, wet winters.

The Spice Route Winery fuses traditional vineyard practices with a modern, minimalist approach in the cellar to create wines that display a lovely rich, depth of flavour.

Charles Back has been credited as a pioneer in exploring the Swartland for its geological composition and unique viticultural heritage which allows for cultivating vineyards in extreme conditions. He has inspired many other winemakers to create their own wines of the region and has been instrumental in the Spice Route Wine Company ascent into the top echelons of South Africa’s wine industry.
