Paul Cluver

Paul CluverPaul Cluver

Paul Cluver is a family-owned and family-run winery that has been in the Cluver family since 1896. Located in the Elgin Valley known for its unique cooler climate and pristine natural habitat, the winery lies about 70km south-east of Cape Town. Acknowledged as being pioneers of wine in the Elgin Valley, the Cluvers are leaders in sustainable farming, focused on producing exquisite wines expressive of this distinctive terroir.

Central to the success story of this winery is the close-knit Cluver family, who have shown that they are great pioneers and visionaries. In fact, four of the five siblings have taken over the reins from parents Paul and Songvei and are currently directly involved in the business. Paul Cluver IV is the managing director, while his sisters Liesl, Inge and Karin are the marketing, financial and orchard production managers respectively. Winemaker Andries Burger is also part of the family and is married to Inge.

Paul Cluver’s wine business forms part of a much larger holistic farming business called ‘De Rust Estate'. In addition to the cellar and vineyards, the farm offers pear and apple orchards, eco-tourism activities such as amphitheatre concerts and a Hereford stud. The 2000+ hectare estate forms part of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, which was the first Biosphere to be declared as such in Southern Africa. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage site with half of the estate being set aside solely for conservation purposes. The farm boasts Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI) accreditation assuring ‘green’ consumers of sound eco-friendly practices in both the vineyards and cellars. Dr Paul Cluver is also a founding member of BWI.
