Located in the heart of the Stellenbosch Winelands, the Kleine Zalze estate dates back to 1695, and is the perfect escape to a timeless era filled with Cape Dutch architecture, sublime wine, fine dining and days spent with friends and family.
German immigrant Nicolaas Cleef was Kleine Zalze’s first owner and responsible for planting over 700 vines on the estate. Kobus and Mariette Basson bought the estate in 1996 together with Mariette’s brother Jan Malan. Together, they began the process of restoring this property by having its soils scientifically evaluated and replanting the vines according to their distinct terroir potential and characteristics. Jan decided to leave the business in 2000, with Rolf Schulz (a German National) taking over his share. In 2013, Kobus Basson became Kleine Zalze’s sole owner.
Over the past 15 years, continuous investment into the winery has seen to it that Kleine Zalze has grown into one of Stellenbosch’s most awarded wineries. Their wines have a distinct classical structure and complexity complemented by a vibrant flavor intensity. Typically South African in style, the Kleine Zalze wines are beautifully balanced and produced using traditional winemaking methods with state-of-the-art equipment and minimal cellar intervention.
Each vineyard block is vinified, assessed and managed separately during the growth period. Extensive yield reduction is applied to produce fruit-driven wines of exceptional quality and character with excellent maturation potential.
The intensity and full fruit flavours of the 'New World' blend effortlessly with the structure and elegance of the 'Old World' to create wines of superior complexity, character and balance that reflect Kleine Zalze’s unique terroir and climate. It is their elegant approach to winemaking and viticulture combined with the personal touch of this family-owned estate that really sets them apart and contributes to their ongoing success.
