Situated high in the Simonsberg Mountains, the Glen Carlou vineyards have an enviable position overlooking the Paarl Valley. Established in 1985 by the acclaimed winemaker Walter Finlayson, this relatively young wine estate already boasts international acclaim for its outstanding wines.
The estate takes its name from a former owner who named Glen Carlou after his three daughters, Lena, Carol and Louise. Blessed with a Mediterranean climate of hot, dry summers and chilly, wet winters combined with rich soils, Glen Carlou is situated in one of the Cape Winelands most premier winegrowing regions.
Rated as one of South Africa’s finest winemakers, Walter Finlayson has dedicated his life to creating exquisite wines that have earned him the coveted Diners Club Winemaker of the Year Award, not once but twice. He has also won many other trophies and medals in the past 20 years and his wines regularly feature on the SA Airways "wines of the month" list. Even though Glen Carlou’s cellar was only completed in 1990, this wine estate has been selling it’s sought-after wines since the 1988 vintage.
In 1995, Walter's son David became Glen Carlou’s cellarmaster after having worked overseas and producing vintages in Bordeaux in France and in Australia. He completed his studies at the Elsenburg College in South Africa.
Only virus-free vines and cultivars were selected that best suited the soil types and climate of the area, which included Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Since then additional cultivars have been planted in vineyards covering 65 hectares that include Shiraz, Malbec, Zinfandel, Tinta Barocca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Corne Festo.
Today Glen Carlou is owned by the world-famous international wine consortium, Hess Family Estates, and it is through their ongoing innovations and passion that this wine estate rates among the crème de la crème New World and South African wine producers
