Chamonix

ChamonixDiscover Chamonix

Chamonix boasts some of the Cape’s highest planted vineyards and is set amongst 300 hectares of untouched natural beauty on the eastern slopes of the breathtaking Franschhoek mountain range. Known for its exquisite wines, this winery won the John Platter ‘Winery of the Year’ award in 2013.

The Cape Chamonix Wine Farm is steeped in history and dates back to 1688 when it was part of La Cotte, the historic Huguenot Estate. Today this winery is well-known for its achingly beautiful setting, award-winning wines and spirits, pure Spring Water and ample facilities.

The farm is blessed with cooling breezes during the scorching summer months and clay-rich, stony soils which combine to give the wines their unique flavor and style. Chamonix also prides itself on using environmentally friendly farming methods and adopting a philosophy of minimal intervention with the belief that excellent wines start on the vine where nature is the primary winemaker.

At Chamonix all the grapes are hand-selected and traditional methods of winemaking are utilized such as the use of spontaneous fermentation and no acidification. The organic compost and mulch produced on the farm are ploughed back into the earth, and the winery makes use of green-harvesting methods (low yields per hectare) which ensure that the vineyards are not over-produced.

Two decades ago German-born adventurer and entrepreneur Chris Hellinger bought Chamonix and immediately began with major improvements. Today, the estate offers visitors a wide range of culinary as well as recreational options in magnificent surroundings.

Chamonix’s philosophy is to work hand-in-hand with nature and the craftsmanship in the cellar to produce a range of premium wines that encapsulate the beauty and essence of the estate.
