Bouchard Finlayson

Bouchard FinlaysonFind out more about Bouchard Finlayson

Halfway between Africa’s most southerly tip (Cape Agulhas) and Cape Town, lies the Walker Bay wine district and the scenic valley within which is known as the Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven and Earth) Valley. This is one of the coolest winegrowing areas in the Cape, known for its cool Atlantic Ocean breezes, and sheltered by the fold mountains which trap the cloud cover and the moisture brought in from the sea by the winds. As a result, summers are warm rather than scorching hot, and winters are primarily mild and frost free.

One of the most awarded boutique wine estates in the valley, Bouchard Finlayson, produces flavor-rich, slow-ripened wines of an exceptional quality that are primarily due to its unique terroir, sun-facing slopes, and duplex soil structure. After obtaining his degree as an Oenologist at the University of Stellenbosch and furthering his studies in Geisenheim, Germany’s ‘Wine Town’, winemaker Peter Finlayson took up the challenge to set up the Hemel-en-Aarde’s first winery. 1989 saw him winning the coveted 'Diners Club Winemaker of the Year' award for his success with the Pinot Noir grape.

Peter continually seeks to raise standards of his award-winning wines and has formed invaluable friendships with associates such as Bruno Lorenson and Paul Bouchard while travelling on study trips to Burgandy. These affiliations have created a web of knowledge, and his dedication to producing the finest wines can be seen across the wide range of wines at Bouchard Finlayson, with particular emphasis on his Pinot Noirs. Today his wines are prized worldwide amongst wine connoisseurs and collectors alike.
