Backsberg Estate

Backsberg EstateDiscover Backsberg Estate

The inherent philosophy at Backsberg has always been one of providing enjoyment and pleasure to wine lovers across the board by producing quality wines not only of structure and finesse but with a high ‘drinkability’ factor.

Backsberg’s history dates back to the last century when Michael Back’s grandfather arrived on Cape Town’s shores as a destitute political and religious Lithuanian refugee. Working first as a dockhand on the reclamation program in what is today known as the Waterfront, then as a bicycle delivery ‘boy,' he finally saved up enough money to buy a butcher shop at Paarl train station. As far as the story goes, one day someone walked into his shop and inquired if he would like to purchase a farm. This led to the start of the family farming business, today known as Backsberg Estate Cellars. Farming activities in those days revolved around livestock, grain, a little fruit and finally some wine grapes. Once the farm started producing wine in the early 1920’s, the wine was sold to the infamous KWV group, or to other faraway destinations such as England.

As the years went by, Michael’s father decided to focus the family farming business more and more on producing wine but was getting squeezed out of the industry by the bigger players due to his large volumes of low-priced wines. In 1969, he decided to sell the brand name Back’s Wines. This not only freed him of much of his debt but gave him the ability to start afresh. While the buyers went off with the name, the equipment and the stock, he set about registering the name Backsberg, reopening the cellars to the public for the first time in 1970.

To this day, the winemaking style at Backsberg Estate is one of keeping it simple and getting it right in the vineyards. With as little intervention as possible, Backberg’s winemaker Alicia together with her diligent team ensures that the cellar produces quality wines with a high degree of drinkability. The wines have a seamless quality where all the flavour components such as acidity, tannin, fruit sweetness and barrel characteristics are well-balanced and in perfect harmony
