For almost a century mixologists and barmen have been looking for Caperitif, the ‘ghost ingredient’ found in numerous cocktail recipes but not produced anywhere in the world. In the cocktail books of the 1930s, including The Savoy Cocktail Book by Harry Cradock, The Official Mixer’s Manual by Patrick Gavin Duffy and The Bartender’s Bible by Gary Regan, there are about 70 classic recipes using Caperitif. Thirty-seven of them originate in SA.
In 2014, after painstaking research into its origins and recipe, a Danish mixologist, Lars Lyndgaard Schmidt, approached Adi Badenhorst with the idea to recreate it and together they have given birth to the 21st century version of this truly unique Cape Aperitif.
